13th May 2010

In the interests of encouraging further debate, Catriona Walker has asked that your attention be drawn to an article in today's Journal Online by Caroline Docherty and Robert Pirrie, Deputy Keeper of the Signet and Chief Executive respectively of the WS Society that is entitled "An Informed Choice".   It is certainly one well worth reading.   Click on the link to access.

12th May 2010

Click here to access letter from Graham Matthews and relative Report on the Meeting of the Council of the Law Society of Scotland held on Friday, 30th April 2010 which keen readers will note is simply a repeat of what has been already posted on his behalf (on 22nd April 2010).  Graham has, however,  also suggested that your attention be drawn to the article in The Journal Online entitled "What kind of choice?"  which he has advised is "an independent and practical take on the issue of separation of representation and regulation" written by Vincent McGovern.  (N.B. According to a reliable source, notwithstanding any suggestion contained in his Report to the contrary, Graham cast his vote at the SGM in opposition to the SLAS motion, a point  of obvious significant relevance to any member of the Society of Advocates who is unable to attend the Law Society AGM on 27th May 2010 in person to cast their vote and who may be still swithering over in whose favour to grant their proxy).

22nd April 2010

Graham Matthews, in his capacity as one of the two Law Society of Scotland Council Members for this area, wishes to share with you the report which he has prepared of the reconvened SGM that was held yesterday and more particularly of the Council Meeting which was held following thereupon.   Click here to access Graham's Report.

19th October 2009

Having kept Maria waiting in suspense for 9 months and 13 days, Owen Robertson finally made his arrival at 2.50pm yesterday, weighing a very handsome 8lbs 15 3/4ozs.   Photographs of Owen and regular reports as to his progress are available on Maria's blog at http://www.blog.mariarobertson.co.uk/.

The Society's Annual Quiz Night was held on 8th October and thanks to our quizmaster and quizmistress, Gareth Treharne and Joanne Tulloch, a very successful evening it was too.    Despite James & George Collie's unprecedented entry of four teams, "No, we don't know Tony Dawson" were decisively pipped at the post by "LC Double Entry", one of two teams that had been entered by Ledingham Chalmers.    The big question is whether the  trophy that was awarded to the winning team has made it to pride of place position in Ledingham Chalmers' Board Room as it is rumoured that some of the attendees at the Quiz Night ended up partying so hard afterwards that they did not get into work until 2pm the following day - always the sign of a good night out.

Please note that if you have spare time at court, and want to submit your Legal Aid applications electronically, our library has wireless broadband internet access. There is also an internet enabled computer available for use if you do not carry your own technology. Obviously this will be of more interest to criminal practitioners.

12th March 2008

It has come to our attention that some members of the public have been allowed access and egress to the courts, through our main door onto Concert Court. The Management Committee have been in communication with the Sheriff Clerk and both sides are in agreement that this is not acceptable use of our door. It should only be used by non members in the event of a fire.

The court staff and Reliance staff will be reminded of this.

It could cause severe problems to the Society if this is not adhered to, so I hope we have your full co-operation.

27th February 2008

Please note that copies are available, for the modest charge of £5 each, of:

Supplemental History of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen 1939-1992

As well as full bibliographical details of the members during that time, it has some extracts from Minutes, names of Presidents and Treasurers and a useful section on Changes to Firms.

If interested please collect from the Society during usual opening hours; cash or cheque are acceptable in exchange for a copy.

4th February 2008

Just thought I would remind you that as well as a lovely quiet library to work in, complete with internet access, we have a coffee room, complete with biscuits. Good for escaping court, or just the office and that eternally ringing phone!

We will shortly be announcing some exciting social and CPD events so if you have not asked to be added to the relevant mailing list, now would be a good time. We have one for all members which you are automatically on, then there are the optional ones for:

CPD training opportunities
Social Events
Defence agents / court practitioners
Trainees

Let me know if there is anything you would like the Society to do for you, or any social or training events you would like to see on offer. We’re always open to suggestions and do what we can to please!
