Professor Philip Love CBE
As most of you will have heard, we have very sadly lost one of our most acclaimed and yet unassuming of members earlier this month. Phil Love would have been familiar to many of us over the years here in Aberdeen through his long and eminent career. Firstly working in private practice as a partner with Campbell Connon & Co, he ultimately became our elected President of the Law Society of Scotland. His knowledge of the intricacies of conveyancing and the need to modernise the whole system through Land Registration remain today from his service on the Scottish Law Commission. A CBE was rightly awarded for these contributions. His second career in the academic was even more successful. He served as our Professor of Conveyancing and latterly Vice Principal at Aberdeen University before taking up a post as the Vice Chancellor of Liverpool University.
On meeting Phil socially or at Society lunches or events, none of these achievements – or the many others which cannot adequately be summarised here – would even be mentioned and his modesty and encouragement of others were attributes that will always be remembered. He was quite simply a warm and generous man who did much to put Aberdeen on the legal map. We shall all miss him.
His good friend and former colleague at the Law Faculty in Aberdeen, Douglas Cusine, wrote a very uplifting tribute in this week’s Scottish Legal News and it is fitting that this is referenced here for those who may not have read it. www.scottishlegal.com/articles/professor-philip-love-cbe-1
On behalf of the Society, we offer our sincere thoughts to his wife Isobel, sons, Steve, Mike and Donald and all the extended family, of whom he was so proud.
The funeral service will take place at 11.30am on Monday 26 February 2024 at Rubislaw Church for any members and friends who may wish to attend
